A cold gray wind swirled outside that evening, which only accented the warmth and cheer inside the serene Brookside Pure Pilates studio. A steady stream of friends and strangers mingled and chatted, all curiously awaiting the evening’s demonstration. Glasses clinked over delectable plates of food, while questions were asked and answered about the many pieces of Pilates apparatus around the room.
Susan Hard, owner of Pure Pilates, offered a warm welcome to the assembled crowd. Ms. Hard has taken great care in creating her studio, selecting instructors who, like her, have been trained under the umbrella of Romana Kryzanowska. Kryzanowska spent her life studying under Joseph Pilates himself, and thus Pure Pilates clients receive the best instruction from those trained as closely to the original source of the work as possible. Pure Pilates offers private lessons for those at all levels of Pilates experience, and tailors each lesson to be individually appropriate for each student. There is a place for everyone in the studio, whether they be an advanced athlete looking to enhance their strength and control, or someone with health conditions that require special attention. Because the instructors place a high priority on correctness and safety, even individuals with arthritis or hip replacements can benefit from participation. Ms. Hard also reminded the audience that although Pilates has grown popular among women, it was originally designed for men – there is no gender exclusivity.
In a stunning display of movement, all four instructors simultaneously began a demonstration of Pilates. The crowd circled the entire studio, and conversations fell quiet as the four accomplished women moved deliberately and gracefully through their work. True professionals, their movements appeared nearly effortless, though gasps of awe and delight from the audience revealed that all understood the incredible amount of effort and practice that went into each movement. But it was a level of excellence that encouraged, rather than intimidated, because the instructors share a passion for helping people of all levels work to achieve what is best for them individually. The evening highlighted what an outstanding health and fitness resource Pure Pilates is in Kansas City. I hope you enjoy these images from the beautiful event.
